daimonji

show the bottom six pics . do you know what these are? have you ever seen ?
these are fire on the five mountains in Kyoto.
Kyoto , which was established in 794 by Kanmu emperor, is one of the oldest cities in japan. it has a lot of temples and beautiful gardens.

well these fire ......... for what?

it is the ceremony that we see our ancestor spirits off.
they come back to each home from the heaven in august 13 and go back 16.
it seems this ceremony has been continued from almost 794 .
in those days there were no electricity . all of around us was deep dark, only moon light.
the fire are coming out in dark.
i wonder what ancient Japanese think of then.

It is very similar to our Hungry Ghost Festival or Zhong Yuan Jie celebrated on the 7th Lunar month which fall on 28 Aug this year. 14 Aug is the first day of the Ghost Month. On this day it is believed that the "Gates of Hell" are opened and that the dead return to visit their living relatives. The Chinese feel that they have to satisfy the imprisoned and hungry ghosts in order to get good fortune and luck in their lives. Haha....interesting!
